Fairland Park Trail
Mid-Atlantic Off Road Enthusiasts (MORE) was working on a bike trail in Fairland Park in Laurel (not pictured). They got permission to build the trail, a six mile loop 4 feet wide, in 2000 from the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, but then in 2005 - with only 1000 feet to go - they were told to stop work.
citing concern over the number of trees being cut down and the safety of other trail users.
Certainly those are valid things to be concerned about - but with only a 1000 feet left? That seems silly, like you don't know what you're doing. Anyway,
MORE wants to see the trail in Laurel completed. Member Austin Steo, of Burtonsville, has started collecting signatures on a petition in hopes that they will help convince commission members to reverse their decision. He expects to present it at a meeting on the park’s master plan in the fall, said Steo, who is MORE’s liaison on park issues.

The last portion of trail was approved, and work is nearly done. Head over to www.more-mtb.org to see how you can help. MORE does a lot of good work for off road riding in the metro area, and there are probably opportunities in your area.
