Harrison Street trail project

Harrisonconnector2 A Park Enhancement Grant (PEG) project is being proposed for the Harrison Street Trail Project. Photos of the site are top the right and another is here.

Funding would come from the Parks Enhancement Grant program.

Goal:

Reclaim an overgrown area in the easement of I-66 that currently provides a hiding place for illicit activities, and create a new, safe, user-friendly mini-trail that links the Custis Trail, the adjacent neighborhood, and the Southern-Shreve Cemetery historical site.

Current Status:

The lack of visibility into this dead-end area (near Fairfax Drive and N. Harrison St.) increases risks to Bluemont neighborhood residents, St. Ann Catholic Church members and children of the St. Ann School, both adjacent to this site.  Changing this location from a “no-man’s-land” to a mini-trail will be a win-win for the community by increasing security while providing pedestrians and bicyclists access between a widely used trail, the Bluemont neighborhood, and an important historical site.

Proposal:

Extend the current asphalt “path” that begins at Harrison Street and connect it to the Custis Trail.

Project Details:

   * Remove bollard at Harrison St.;

   * Remove invasive plants and vegetation blocking the current asphalt “path” and along the route of the new mini-trail;

   * Remove portions of the old, rusted guardrail in the route of the new mini-trail;

   * Extend current asphalt “path” past the Southern-Shreve Cemetery to the Custis Trail, approximately 100 feet to the southeast;

   * Install a drainage pipe under the mini-trail where it connects to the Custis Trail;

   * Install bike trail entrance and exit signs at N. Harrison St and at the Custis Trail;

   * Install along the Custis Trail a sign for the Southern-Shreve Cemetery historical site;

   * Clear vegetation from the existing concrete steps between the existing asphalt path and the Southern-Shreve Cemetery and reinstall handrail.
